Understanding BPD and the Family Impact

Living with or supporting someone with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), also known as Emotionally Unstable Personality Disorder (EUPD), can be challenging. The intense emotional experiences, fear of abandonment, and difficulties in relationships that often accompany BPD can put significant strain on both the individual and their loved ones. Families and carers may find themselves feeling overwhelmed, helpless, or unsure of how to provide the right kind of support. That’s why DBT-UK offers the Family Group—a structured programme designed to help family members and carers develop the skills needed to navigate these challenges effectively.

A new Family Group is starting on Monday, 28 April at 5pm, providing a valuable opportunity for loved ones to gain insight and learn practical strategies that can make a real difference.

Why Support for Families Matters

BPD is a condition that makes emotional regulation difficult, leading to sudden and intense mood swings, impulsive behaviours, and difficulties in interpersonal relationships. In an attempt to cope, some individuals may engage in self-harm or even suicidal behaviours. These emotional struggles can make it challenging for families to know how to respond in a way that is supportive and constructive.

Unfortunately, there are many misconceptions surrounding BPD. In the past, it was often misunderstood, and those living with it were unfairly labelled as manipulative or untreatable. However, research and clinical practice have shown that individuals with BPD are highly sensitive to the emotions of others and that with the right support, they can develop skills to lead fulfilling lives.

By equipping family members with knowledge and skills, the DBT-UK Family Group aims to strengthen relationships. Through the group, families can create a supportive environment that fosters recovery and emotional stability.

About the DBT-UK Family Group

Led by Darryl Christie, an expert in BPD and a Consultant Dialectical Behaviour Therapist, the Family Group is based on the Family Connections Model. He is passionate about improving family connections and providing carers with the tools they need to support their loved ones effectively.

The programme is structured over 10 weeks, covering essential topics to enhance understanding and improve communication.
