Distress Tolerance Module

Distress Tolerance module gives clients helpful physiological and mental skills to be able to deal with their emotions when they turn into distress. This can help clients to learn healthy ways of coping rather than again turning to unhelpful behaviours. For example, the skill TIPP teaches them using cold water to reduce their heart rate followed by paced breathing can allow them to calm their nervous system. Or helping them to understand the pros and cons behind their behaviour can allow them to keep long term goals in mind over short term. Once a client gains confidence in their ability to do this many have found they are much less reliant on their old behaviours to cope and increase the days where in which they no longer self-harm and/or use substances for example.
